Description:
The overall objective of the proposed studies is to determine the environmental hazard of phototoxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) to freshwater fish and invertebrates. Previous investigations and research in progress have defined several important aspects of the photo-induced toxicity of several PAH. However, there are many environmental factors that still require examination, and predictions of photo-induced toxicity have not been rigorously validated in the field. In addition, the importance of genetic variation within a population of PAH exposed organisms has also not been thoroughly evaluated. If the photo-induced toxicity of PAH to fish is determined to be a potential hazard under natural conditions, then the assessment of PAH impact must include considerations of factors regulating this phenomenon. Because hazard is determined by the levels of toxicity, exposure, and genetic variability, the factors involved in the expression of toxicity, the various routes of exposure and bioaccumulation, and differential genetic sensitivity are to be examined. Effects due to dissolved organic carbon, particulate inorganic matter and primary reproduction will be examined. Routes of exposure from food and from sediments will also be examined in the proposed studies. In addition, differential genetic sensitivity to fluoranthene under the influence of these factors will be assessed. Finally, microcosm studies and in situ field experiments will be used to validate laboratory studies and predictions.Publications and Presentations:
