Description:Corrosion of metal structures is estimated to cost many billions of dollars annually. The most common methods of corrosion inhibition or prevention involve the application of heavy surface treatments (paints and primers) or conversion coatings using various metallics in processes that are strictly controlled and regulated due to toxicity and possible carcinogenic properties. F&S proposes to develop an alternate process that is capable of corrosion inhibition without the use or generation of hazardous materials, which also can be adapted to the coating of large surfaces. A new coating process has been developed based on ionic self-assembled monolayers (ISAM) that: (1) has demonstrated corrosion inhibition of aluminum alloys; (2) neither contains nor generates hazardous materials; and (3) has demonstrated practical application methods, including spraying and nonelectrolytic brushing. This Phase I project will adapt the coating process to steel and other metals and alloys. The resulting coating process will allow the long-term storage of raw materials without the need for refinishing or removal prior to use. The ultrathin coating layer is compatible with all normal fabrication processes, including welding and painting.
The proposed process will find application in protection of large structures such as ships, bridges, automotive components, and commercial aircraft manufacturing. It will serve as a low-cost, environmentally friendly replacement of corrosion inhibition coatings for many smaller structures and components in commercial and industrial applications.
