Objective:

The overall goal of this P3 Project is to determine if low-cost materials (i.e., waste byproduct and natural materials) can be used to effectively recover nutrients from urine for subsequent use in agriculture. The specific objectives of this P3 Project are to: (1) quantify the adsorption capacity of various low-cost materials for ammonium, phosphate, and potassium; (2) calculate water and nutrient mass balances for urine separation, treatment, and beneficial use; and (3) create education and outreach material on sustainable wastewater management.

Approach:

The overall goal of this P3 Project is to determine if low-cost materials (i.e., waste byproduct and natural materials) can be used to effectively recover nutrients from urine for subsequent use in agriculture. The specific objectives of this P3 Project are to: (1) quantify the adsorption capacity of various low-cost materials for ammonium, phosphate, and potassium; (2) calculate water and nutrient mass balances for urine separation, treatment, and beneficial use; and (3) create education and outreach material on sustainable wastewater management.

Expected Results:

Successful completion of this P3 Project will achieve the following expected outputs: identification of low-cost materials that can effectively recover ammonium, phosphate, and potassium from urine; material balance calculations for different urine separation and treatment schemes; and educational outreach on sustainable wastewater management by using high impact social media that reaches a broad audience. Together these outputs will achieve the outcome of this P3 Project, which is an innovative adsorption process that recovers nutrients from urine for beneficial use in agriculture thereby advancing the social, environmental, and economic sustainability of wastewater management and fertilizer production.
