Description:

The objective of this project is to develop a computer simulation modeling framework that will facilitate the construction of spatial, ecological models. The framework will allow models to be assembled using standardized, reusable functions known as components. The framework will consist of three major parts: a graphical model building tool programmed in Java, a model running application programmed in C++, and a library of modeling components. The parts are designed to be platform independent and communicate via standard text files. Two of the goals in the design of the framework are collaboration and parallel processing. A beginning component library will be created based on the essential concepts contained in two existing models: TREGRO, a model of individual tree physiology, and the forest gap model Zelig. Further additions to the library will be components that allow interaction with a geographical information system. Using this library, new spatial, individual-based forest models will be created that will test the modeling framework and the component library, as well as provide examples of its use. The result will be an environment for constructing spatial ecological models that facilitates collaboration, experimentation with model structure, code reuse, high performance, and reliability in simulation modeling activities. In addition, there will be an initial library of components and new models of forest dynamics.
