Research Category: Environmental Justice , Human Health
Objective:
-
To create an Environmental Health Subcore in our Community Engagement Core to support current and future research projects.
- To provide opportunities for research positions for MPH students in our environmental health track and undergraduate students majoring in environmental science.
- To provide Healthy Homes assessments to AI community members.
- To provide environmental health education to AI community members, facilities/building managers, and providers.
-
To expand our research project examining tribal college students tobacco use to include exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), tobacco marketing and availability of tobacco products.
- To understand tribal college students exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) and marketing of recreational tobacco products.
- To identify locations where tribal college students purchase recreational tobacco products through Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping.
Progress Summary:
Specific Aim 1: Our Environmental Health Subcore has been created and named GreeNation. We currently have 4 MPH students leading our Subcore, all of whom are currently in our Environmental Health track in our MPH program and will be graduating in 2013. Our Healthy Homes assessments are underway. Our students have all been trained in all parts of the assessments and education for home owners/renters and are working with the team at Childrens Mercy Hospital to conduct assessments. We have developed all associated surveys and reports and have designed data collection while in the home using ipads with cameras; this allows us to collect all data and pictures together to create the best reports possible for home owners/renters. We have conducted 3 home assessments and have an additional 6 scheduled, along with a list of nearly 40 additional families who are interested. We have created environmental health education sessions for community members, facilities/building managers, and providers, along with pre- and post-tests and evaluations for sessions. We began our trainings with the community sessions and have completed education with 148 community members. We are now in the process of scheduling both provider and facilities/building managers sessions.
Specific Aim 2: Our longitudinal study of tribal college students incorporated environmental tobacco exposure and tobacco marketing questions during their spring 2012 survey. These surveys will be repeated every 6 months in each longitudinal cohort (we plan a total of 5 cohorts of 250 students each, followed over their 2-4 years in college). Our GIS mapping project is well underway. We have developed all of our assessment tools, including tobacco exposure, purchasing, and marketing, as well as food outlets, locations for physical activity, and alcohol availability. Our first set of assessments has been completed in summer 2012.
Future Activities:
Specific Aim 1: We plan for a total of 72 home assessments; we anticipate completing these assessments by January 2013. We plan to run additional community member trainings for a total of 240 participants; these will be completed by the end of November 2012. We will be training 30 facilities/building managers and 30 providers; these will be completed by mid-December, 2012.
Specific Aim 2: Our tribal college student surveys will be done in October and April of each year. We plan a series of 6-12 focus groups (depending on data saturation) with tribal college students about exposure to environmental tobacco smoke this fall, to be completed by the end of November 2012. Our GIS mapping team will complete 4 total maps, one during each season of the year for comparison data. All GIS mapping will be completed by spring 2013.
