Objective:
The objective of this project is the 1) Identify pollutants in the drinking water of Nagcarlan, Philippines; a disadvantaged agricultural town south of Manila, and 2) To design a water filter using biodegradable, indigenous materials to address the pollutants.
Approach:
Activated carbon (AC) derived from coconut has been identified as a candidate material, and will be tested in combination with moringa seeds, chitosan, and sand to remove water pollutants. All of these materials are plentiful in this area of the Philippines, and completely biodegradable.
Expected Results:
We expect to generate a biodegradable water filter containing the appropriate combination of activated carbon, moringa seeds, chitosan, and sand to address the pollutants in Nagcarlan’s water. To ensure sustainability, we intend to instruct the citizens on how to construct the filters, so that they have the ability to continue using them after the grant period ends.
