Objective:
In 1933, the Tennessee Valley Authority created a model community in Norris, Tennessee as part of the Norris Dam construction project. A key feature of this New Deal village was the Norris House, a series of home designs built for modern, efficient, and sustainable living. In light of the 75th anniversary of the Norris Project, the University of Tennessee team reinterpreted the Norris paradigm and created a New Norris House - an affordable and sustainable home for the 21st century. The purpose of the team's effort was to design and construct the new home for use as 1) a residency and demonstration project and 2) a vehicle to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of building performance. Furthermore, the project must be technologically advanced as well as appropriately integrated with the existing historic community.
Summary/Accomplishments (Outputs/Outcomes):
Over the course of design and construction of the home, the project team explored its research goals through a multi-faceted approach. The project team investigated the effectiveness of off-site production, material/structural efficiencies, regional sourcing, water resources, along with many other related topics. All goals were all considered in light on project goals to effectively integrate the contemporary structure into the historical fabric of Norris, Tennessee.
Conclusions:
At the conclusion of the P3 Award period, the project team's goals had been met. Construction was completed in July of 2011 and two live-in occupants took residence at this time. Based on their occupancy patterns and climate/weather, data collection began shortly thereafter. Post-occupancy evaluation and monitoring is continuing under further funding secured from a variety of public and private sources.
