Identification of Novel Proteins that May Impede Carcinogenesis

EPA Grant Number: F07P11135
Title: Identification of Novel Proteins that May Impede Carcinogenesis
Investigators: Statwick, Joseph
Institution: Occidental College
EPA Project Officer: Lee, Sonja
Project Period: August 2, 2007 through May 2, 2009
Project Amount: $41,500
RFA: GRO Fellowships for Undergraduate Environmental Study (2007) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: Academic Fellowships

Objective:

Research will explore the genetic diversity of Hesperoyucca whipplei in the Los Angeles Basin, California. This project will address how genetic diversity has been Affected by both air pollution and habitat loss/fragmentation, and how these factors might interact. As yucca has a very highly specialized pollination system, it is expected to be very sensitive to environmental degradation.

Approach:

My methods will include field mapping of several yucca populations, use of the College’s GIS system to create a spatially explicit map with population and air pollution data. Concurrently , I will use seeds collected from known individuals in 2005 and 2006, and collect additional seeds in 2007, to conduct a survey of genetic diversity using AFLP marker analysis.

Supplemental Keywords:

Scientific Discipline, Ecosystem Protection/Environmental Exposure & Risk, Habitat, Ecology and Ecosystems, Environmental Monitoring, habitat fragmentation, habitat loss, biodiversity, yucca, anthropogenic stressors
