Description:

Regularly branched dendrimer macromolecules have porous interior regions defined by the branch segment and chemical structure of the polymer. The focus of this study is to use classical dendrimer polymer chemistry as a means for the directed synthesis of membranes with well defined pore dimensions. This objective will be accomplished through the synthesis of amphiphilic dendrimeric block copolymers that can be self-assembled to form ultrathin organic films. Fundamental studies of the permeability and selectivity of gases and gas mixtures in the thin films will be examined as a function of polymer branch segment rigidity, chemical structure and branch length. The transport properties of oriented bulk diblock copolymer films is also of interest, and will be studied in conjunction with the ultrathin film studies. In bulk film materials, the domain morphology of block copolymers will of particular interest in creating new self-assembling membrane materials. It is expected that this project will result in a new body of knowledge on the transport properties of dendrimers, a novel class of polymers that offers potential in separations applications.
