Description:

Technical Challenge: Columbia University Engineers Without Borders (CU-EWB) is developing a sustainable water management plan for Sakyikrom, Ghana. The community currently has limited access to potable water and will be growing at an astounding rate with the construction of a new major highway though the community. Therefore, sustainable water resources must be developed to serve the growing population without engendering environmental degradation.

Approach:

The CU-EWB team will be using methods that are well developed in the United States to establish this water development plan. However, most developing communities, including Sakyikrom, do not have access to the knowledge and resources to perform such a study prior to tapping available water sources. Therefore, many communities inadvertently cause environmental degradation, including pollution of the very water they are tapping, by simply accessing the available water in an unsustainable and unplanned manor. CU-EWB will stress the importance of responsible water management practices as the community develops.

Expected Results:

Stage one of the project involves a detailed water availability and quality study. This will involve collection of topographic data, quantification of the available water resources, and quality studies for all potential water sources.

Supplemental Keywords:
