Objective:
The overall objective is to develop an interdisciplinary center for the study, protection and amelioration of the coastal environment'. The center will enhance understanding of ways that human activity in rapidly developing coastal areas affects ecological systems and of human institutions and practices for managing such effects.
Approach:
Approach: An interdisciplinary team of natural and social scientists will form a new center for Science and Policy Applications for the Coastal Environment (SPACE). Research will focus on the fate, effect and remediation of pollutants; social and policy implications of coastal environmental science; and data management and analysis through GIS and statistical modeling.
Expected Results:
(1) Insight for managing water resources by understanding historical anthropogenic activities that have impacted the environment such as terrestrial runoff, water quality, and local land-based environmental modifications; (2). Assessment of land-use changes and other anthropogenic influences on the establishment of cyanob4cterial populations, and determination of the water quality parameters which promote cyanobacterial persistence, and lead to a shift to cyanobacterial dominance; (3) Collection of scientific data !essential for implementation in future PCB remediation field projects; (4) Analysis of the socioeconomic and cultural factors that underlie contemporary patterns of lawn management and quantitative evaluation of the environmental benefits that could be realized through an expansion of the adoption of xeriscaping within the study area; (5) Analysis of best practices 'i,, for Marine Protected Area (MPA) management for shallow-water, tropical ecosystems, identification of key management indicators, and establishment of a management database for Caribbean coral reefs; (6) Development of a GIS-based integrated tool for researchers and resource managers to determine the linkages among the soils, land use, watershed hydrology, noni-point source pollution, minimum flows and health of an aquatic habitat, and to improve risk assessment and management; (7) Establishment of analytical core support, and (8) Deployment of a highly sophisticated Guided Surface Vehicle (GSV) for use in monitoring of shallow water ecosystems.
