Title: Visualizing Growth and Sustainability of Water Resources
Investigators: Booker, James F.
Institution: Alfred University
EPA Project Officer: Packard, Benjamin H
Project Period: September 1, 2000 through August 31, 2002
RFA: Targeted Research Center (2000) Recipients Lists
Research Category: Targeted Research
Objective:
The objective of this research is to visualize and benchmark the productivity and sustainability of water resource use in major western U.S. river basins. The research focuses on identifying and mapping impacts to instream flow levels from utilizing scarce water resources to meet increasing water demands brought about by emerging environmental demands and population growth.
Approach:
Conceptual and demonstration phases under the grant have been completed. One application under the grant (to the Rio Grande Basin) has been completed, with work on additional applications to the Platte River Basin and the Colorado River Basin nearing completion. In each case base mapping and data visualization have been achieved. Integration with data from previous studies remain. With this integration, and the development of the corresponding presentations and papers the project will be complete.
The completed work includes development of GIS tools and capabilities for use in visualizing water resource flows and uses across western river basins. These tools and capabilities are being utilized by an undergraduate student research assistant who has prepared mapping for the Platte and Colorado Rivers.
Expected Results:
The application of these tools to the Rio Grande Basin to enhance communication of research findings is shown in the research referenced below.
