Objective:
The Northeast Waste Management Officials’ Association (NEWMOA) in partnership with the Massachusetts Office of Technical Assistance (MA OTA) worked on or completed the following tasks under the “Moving toward Sustainable Manufacturing through Efficient Materials and Energy Use” grant number X3-83220301 from the U.S. EPA ORD covering the budget period of October 1, 2008 – March 31, 2009.Progress Summary:
Task 1: Software Development
During this budget period, NEWMOA and MA OTA continued to work closely with the contractor, Sullivan International Group (formerly SYS Technologies) on the development of EMFACT version 1.0. NEWMOA, MA OTA and SYS Technologies met via conference call in October and December 20008 and January and February 2009 to discuss questions and technical issues with the EMFACT tool and to plan training workshops. By the end of the budget period, NEWMOA had posted EMFACT on its webpage for download.
Task 2: Software Dissemination
NEWMOA collaborated with MA OTA and Sullivan International Group on posting EMFACT on the NEWMOA webpage for user download (www.newmoa.org/prevention/emfact/index.cfm). NEWMOA included a notice about EMFACT on its homepage (www.newmoa.org). NEWMOA sent out notices about EMFACT availability to various email lists, including a list of over 60 participants from the Northeast Assistance and Pollution Prevention Roundtable, and the national Environmental Management Accounting listserv of over 50 participants nationwide. The EMFACT software was also announced through the National P2 Roundtable e-newsletter in the spring of 2009.
Task 3: Training for Users
NEWMOA, MA OTA, and Sullivan International Group developed, organized, and held EMFACT Pilot Workshops in January 2008. The first workshop was co-sponsored with the Toxics Use Reduction Planners Association (TURPA) and took place on January 6, 2009 at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, MA and involved approximately 25 participants. NEWMOA conducted a verbal evaluation of this session at the end and received a number of constructive comments and suggestions from the participants. NEWMOA, MA OTA, and Sullivan International took these suggestions and modified the curriculum and presentations for future workshops. The second pilot workshop took place on January 30, 2009 at the Southbridge Conference Center in Southbridge, MA for approximately 20 participants. NEWMOA collected and summarized the evaluations from this workshop (see attached). Copies of the PowerPoint slides that were presented at these workshops are available at www.newmoa.org/prevention/emfact/EMFACTWorkshopEMFACTOverviewPart1.pdf and www.newmoa.org/prevention/emfact/EMFACTWorkshopEMFACTOverviewPart2.pdf.
NEWMOA conducted two webinars to promote EMFACT through the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable (NPPR) and the Collaborative Science and Technology Network for Sustainability (CSTNS) Program. The 2-hour NPPR webinar took place on February 2, 2009 and involved over 25 participants. The 2-hour CSTNS webinar took place on February 5 and involved over 20 participants. There were no written evaluations conducted of these webinars.
NEWMOA initiated plans for additional workshops, including a training session at the National Environmental Partnership Summit, a workshop for New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, and other agencies and locations.
Task 4: Project Evaluation
To be completed in future budget periods.
