Description:
The goal of this project is to provide a mechanism that equips consumers with the means for encouraging the homebuilding industry—designers, homebuilders, retail suppliers—to use environmentally preferable products (ENP) and processes in the design and construction of affordable homes. The design approach closes the gap that exists in the literature available to consumers and the data produced by the scientific community on the selection of ENP. The students will produce: guidance for ENP in homebuilding industry practices; material specifications and green building techniques for various levels of sustainability; and matrices for examining the cost benefit analysis of traditional vs. green building and design materials and techniques. This proposal focuses on the population in EPA Region IV (southeastern), which has a disproportionate share of people who are medically at risk because of age and infirmity and because they live in substandard homes. Economic development will be fostered by expanding the environmentally conscious customer base of the homebuilding industry and by classifying existing product lines according to short and long-term economic benefits. This will lead to growth in production and sales of ENP and materials. This initiative equips consumers with the means for encouraging the homebuilding industry to use ENP and processes.
Objective:
It will address: pollution prevention at a regional level with implications for national and international applications and the use of waste as the source of new ENP; multi-dimensional environmental impact of ENP use and reuse; life-cycle analysis and consideration of cradle-to-cradle ENP production process; and increasing knowledge concerning effective product labeling for environmental impact of ENP components and installation methods. Consultants in the fields of environmental health, materials technology, interior design, and architecture will assist in the evaluation and validation of the guidance for potential commercial use in the homebuilding industry and potential for greening existing curricula. Education and training of students in this interdisciplinary field of technology and interior design will prepare them for professional careers where they must understand and communicate as building and design practitioners and respect the contributions of each profession in the protection of the health and welfare of people and the planet within the built environment.
