Use of source reduction and energy efficiency in production processes in Mexico and the US

EPA Grant Number: U914974
Title: Use of source reduction and energy efficiency in production processes in Mexico and the US
Investigators: Lair, Heather A.
Institution: University of Michigan
EPA Project Officer: Packard, Benjamin H
Project Period: January 1, 1996 through August 5, 1998
Project Amount: $68,000
RFA: STAR Graduate Fellowships (1996) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: Fellowship - Industrial/Social Ecology , Pollution Prevention/Sustainable Development , Academic Fellowships , Environmental Justice

Objective:

The objective of this research project is to involve source reduction or energy efficiency, and an analysis of the companies' production processes, and a cost-benefit analysis of the means of remediation. This research project involves two internships/consultancies—one with a U.S.-based company and another with an industry in Mexico. It would be ideal if the two companies were working in the same industry. The U.S. work might lead to an opportunity to intern with a Mexican subsidiary.

Approach:

I would compare the outcomes of the two experiences, examining the decision-making process, client receptivity, cost effectiveness of recommended changes, the role of environmental regulation, public relations considerations, impact of the North American Free Trade Agreement, etc. I would conduct a literature review the semester before the first internship and write the case study(ies) based on submission criteria for targeted journals. Their publication would be dependent on the permission of the companies involved.

Expected Results:

This research project has both domestic and international ramifications; the United States' shared border with Mexico means that environmental protection cannot succeed if practiced only north of the Rio Grande. It is in the best interest of the United States to support the strengthening and greening of Mexican industry. The transfer of "clean" technologies to Mexico will ensure that their economy grows in a sustainable way that is beneficial to both countries.
