Objective:

The objective of this research project is to investigate the economic concepts of resource evaluation, the econometric skills necessary to interpret data, and the possible links between resource economics and spatial analysis.

Approach:

I am conducting a contingent-valuation (nonmarket) research project, which analyzes data collected from a referendum survey of trout fishermen in the Monongahela National Forest (MNF), West Virginia. Contingent-valuation methods will be used to analyze the benefits derived from potential policies to increase water quality (by decreasing the acidic level) of streams in the MNF and, therefore, increase the quality of fishing. I will analyze the MNF data to test the statistical efficiency of welfare estimates from double-bound dichotomous-choice questions versus single-bound dichotomous-choice questions. I also will conduct a comparison of the results of two utility-theoretic models of referendum choice (Cameron, 1988; Hanemann, 1984). I would use the MNF survey data to test the hypothesis that Cameron's and Hanemann's methods are duals of one another.
