The Role of Public Health in Environmental Planning

EPA Grant Number: U915839
Title: The Role of Public Health in Environmental Planning
Investigators: Waddick, Caitlin J.
Institution: Georgia Institute of Technology
EPA Project Officer: Lee, Sonja
Project Period:
Project Amount: $83,890
RFA: STAR Graduate Fellowships (2000) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: Fellowship - Urban Planning , Academic Fellowships , Environmental Justice

Objective:

The objectives of this research project are to: (1) investigate the role of public health in environmental planning and the role of planning in public health; (2) explore how to implement principles and practices that protect public health and the environment, especially at the community level; and (3) apply and advance my previous work in environmental planning, housing policy, land use planning, and community development.

Approach:

This research project will use a case study approach to examine the processes in which existing healthy communities have formed and the role of planning in their development. I have already identified five cases of healthy communities that I plan to study. I have performed similar case study research that investigates the role of planning in the implementation of sustainability principles in metropolitan organizations. In addition, I plan to survey individuals with MCS to determine the planning and design standards necessary for healthy communities. Ultimately, I would like to update "sustainable" and "green" building design standards to consider principles of public health and less toxic living.
