Objective:

The objectives of this research project are to illuminate the fundamental mechanisms at work in hybrid membrane-sorption processes and identify potential enhancements to make these systems work more efficiently.

Approach:

The approach of the study includes the following steps: (1) identify operational parameters that optimize process performance of membrane-sorbent systems using computer simulations based on currently available mathematical process models and membrane systems; (2) prepare a bench-scale reactor and test mathematical model predictions; (3) identify mathematical model refinements to more accurately describe the process mechanisms; (4) screen and test novel adsorbents for improved process performance; (5) screen and test alternate reactor configurations for improved process performance; and (6) recommend reactor configurations and operational parameters for field-scale testing.

Expected Results:

This research project is intended to provide a better understanding of the fundamental process mechanisms and to provide insight into optimizing hybrid membrane-sorption processes, which will be a very important technology for meeting increasingly stringent and multidimensional drinking water quality goals.
