The Microeconomy of Chemical Use on Residential Landscapes

EPA Grant Number: R823342
Title: The Microeconomy of Chemical Use on Residential Landscapes
Investigators: Zilberman, David
Current Investigators: Zilberman, David , Templeton, Scott R.
Institution: University of California - Berkeley
EPA Project Officer: Chung, Serena
Project Period: May 1, 1995 through May 1, 1998
Project Amount: $302,366
RFA: Socio-Economics (1995) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: Environmental Justice

Description:

The purpose of this project is to provide a better understanding of the use of chemicals by households for landscaping and to provide an evaluation of landscape activities. Landscapes provide benefits that are not fully captured by markets, and the study will attempt to assess their value by understanding time allocations and other choices of households regarding landscapes. The study will also provide estimates of demands for different types of chemicals and the likelihood of choice of different landscape management strategies. The study will expand the household production function model to address landscape choices and use various types of econometric techniques (e.g., logit, tobit, nonnested probit) to estimate various functional relationships depicting landscape choices. The results will be useful in assessing water quality or pesticide regulations that affect landscape, for example, regulation of chemicals used for landscaping.
