Description:

In this research program, the emphasis is placed upon improvement of the Biogenic Emission Inventory System (BEIS) for predicting hydrocarbon emissions from vegetation. Verification of the current emission modeling system (BEIS2) will be conducted by linking measured ambient concentrations of BVOCs to predicted emissions at various locations in the eastern/central United States and at sites in the Pacific Northwest. Ratios of different BVOCs in ambient samples will be used as a first step in the verification. Fluxes estimated from vertical profiles of emission species measured with a tethered balloon sampling system will be employed as a second step in the verification. At one site, multi-scale emission measurements leaf, branch, canopy, and landscape will be used to complete the verification studies. This work will be conducted in cooperation with ongoing oxidant programs at selected locations throughout the United States.

The end products will be improved emission models for BVOCs with quantified uncertainties and a better understanding of the formation of oxygenated VOCs from biogenic sources. These will help place bounds on oxidant predictions and thus highlight errors in current modeling methods. Overall, this will strengthen the development of effective control strategies for ozone in the United States.
