Objective:
The purpose of this study is to characterize the effects of rough bed surfaces and complex topographies on turbulence in streams. The work is intended to clarify how these factors influence longitudinal advection and dispersion of heat and mass, and also will bear on predicting the motions of flood waves within rough, irregular channels. The specific approach is to collect and statistically analyze detailed velocity measurements collected within two reaches that reflect the effects of both a rough bed and strong convective accelerations associated with a complex bed topography, and which do not exhibit logarithmic forms. The results will be used to assess the statistical confidence that can be placed on model predictions of flow rates and transport when bed roughness and convective acceleration data are limited or are not available.
