The Catalytic Oxidation of Carbon Monoxide at Ambient Temperatures

EPA Grant Number: U915348
Title: The Catalytic Oxidation of Carbon Monoxide at Ambient Temperatures
Investigators: Weber, Adam
Institution: Tufts University
EPA Project Officer: Packard, Benjamin H
Project Period: September 7, 1998 through January 1, 2001
Project Amount: $34,000
RFA: STAR Graduate Fellowships (1998) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: Academic Fellowships , Safer Chemicals , Fellowship - Chemical Engineering

Objective:

The objectives of this research project are to: (1) investigate various preparation parameters in making catalysts for the total oxidation of carbon monoxide at ambient temperatures; and (2) examine parametric studies and their application to the oxidation of volatile organics.

Approach:

I will examine the gold supported on ceria catalyst system. The activity of the catalysts is highly dependent on the morphology, size, and related properties of the designed catalysts, which, in turn, are dependent on the preparation method used. I will be studying three different preparation methods—coprecipitation, deposition precipitation, and cogelation. With each method, certain parameters will be varied (e.g., initial solution concentration, calcination temperature, preparation temperature, precursor, gold loading, dopants, and carbonate used). The catalysts will be ranked by their light-off temperature for the carbon monoxide reaction, and will be characterized by methods such as scanning transmission electron microscopy, inductively coupled plasma, x-ray diffraction, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. After the parameters and methods have been examined, the most active sample will be used for additional studies, including parametric studies of the carbon monoxide reaction and the oxidation of propane and propylene. The parametric studies include deactivation and the effects of water, contact time (space velocity), carbon dioxide, and oxygen concentration. At the completion of the project, an active catalyst and preparation protocol will be generated.
