Objective:
The objective of this project is to develop a reliable process which can be used in both small and large drinking water treatment facilities for the elimination of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) from the treated water, containing humic substances. The new system combines ozonation with fixed-film biological treatment.
The development of the system will be based on the research studies of the ozonation of humic substances and subsequent biodegradation of the ozonation by-products. The project will examine how humic substances are modified during ozonation and the response of biological systems to changes in humic substances which occur during pre-ozonation. In addition, the project will attempt to identify the relationship between ozonation of humic substances, the biodegradability of the ozonation by-products and the formation of THMs and other organochlorinated compounds during disinfection using chlorine. After ozonation, the humic substances and their by-products will be treated using a fixed-film biological treatment system. While the goal of this project is to develop a process for the disinfection of waters containing humic substances, the results of the proposed research can be successfully utilized for the treatment of landfill leachates and some specific wastewaters (e.g., pulp bleaching effluents) that contain considerable amounts of humic substances resulting from the decomposition of biological materials.
