Objective:
The objective of this research project is to identify and evaluate participatory planning methods for the integration of environmental standards into urban and regional planning and local economic development.
Approach:
My research seeks to evaluate the community-based planning processes devoted to this objective through case examples in the United States and emerging economies. Practical application of environmental planning to define and foster sustainable community and commercial development is pursued through research and planning efforts in New York City (NYC) and in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Fieldwork has involved land-use surveys, zoning analysis, mapping and graphic representation, social data gathering and analysis, and public presentation of findings and recommendations. Planning research in NYC analyzed the impacts to local businesses, residents, and transportation systems from increased development of large retail stores and sale of City-owned property on 125th Street in East Harlem. Current work involves research and analysis on behalf of a neighborhood association, the Sociedad de Fomento de Palermo Viejo, to analyze their plan for redevelopment of the Palermo Railyard site, currently occupied by active and abandoned rail lines, warehouses, and office buildings.
