Description:
1) To develop a regional scale modelling approach to predict variation in lake ecosystem properties as a function of landscape characteristics; 2) To analyze landscape and within-lake processes that determine variation in lake dissolved organic carbon (DOC); 3) To analyze temporal trends in lake DOC related to landscape and lake processes.
Approach:
We propose a mass balance, likelihood model that describes the inputs, outputs, and within-system processing of DOC in lakes. The model is in a form suitable for characterizing DOC variation in lakes as a function of landscape features such as wetland configuration and type, as well as watershed and lake morphometry. We will test the model using existing data on DOC for over 500 lakes in the Adirondack Park of New York. This lake dataset will be combined with recently developed GIS data layers to evaluate lake-landscape linkages. In addition, a field program is proposed to resurvey a subset of the lakes to assess the ability of the modelling approach to characterize how changes due to landscape alteration affect lake ecosystem properties.
