Description:
The current metal adhesive bonding process consists of several steps that generate many hazardous wastes. Metal surface pretreatment by anodization or chemical etching produces a large amount of chromium containing wastewater while the priming step uses the primer containing solvents and chromates. This SBIR project will demonstrate the feasibility of formation of environmentally benign non-surface pretreatment water-based primers for adhesive bonding. The effective non-chromate inhibitors for the water-based primers will be identified, and a family of water based, non-surface-pretreatment solutions will be formulated; the developed primers can be used in aluminum alloys as well as titanium alloys and steels.Publications and Presentations:
