Suppression of Cyanide Formation in Hall Process Potlining

EPA Contract Number: 68D10068
Title: Suppression of Cyanide Formation in Hall Process Potlining
Investigators: Keller, Rudolf
Small Business: EMEC Consultants
EPA Contact: Richards, April
Phase: II
Project Period: September 1, 1991 through June 1, 1994
Project Amount: $150,000
RFA: Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) - Phase II (1991) Recipients Lists
Research Category: SBIR - Pollution Prevention , Pollution Prevention/Sustainable Development , Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR)

Description:

Spent potlining from industrial primary aluminum pro- duction cells is a designated hazardous material because of its cyanide content. Over 100,000 tons of this material are annually landfilled or temporarily stored in the United States.

It would be desirable to avoid the cyanide formation during operation of the cells. EMEC Consultants proposes to continue investigations of the conditions at which cya- nides form and migrate within the cell, to identify possible approaches to suppress cyanide formation, and to conduct experiments on industrial production units to test elements of a proprietary method.

If successful, the project would lead to a cost-effective method to suppress the formation of cyanide in the lining of industrial aluminum production cells.
