Description:

Chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHCs) pose environmental and health risks. CHCs can be highly toxic, and some are potential mutagens and carcinogens. CHC emissions are regulated under the U.S. Clean Air Act. Thermal and catalytic incineration are considered to be the best methods for CHC destruction. Unfortunately CHCs are combustion inhibitors when added to hydrocarbon fuels. Additionally, if combustion conditions are not carefully controlled, products of incomplete combustion can be formed that are more toxic than the original CHCs.

Catalytic incineration for CHC destruction is currently limited by the commercial availability of stable catalysts with high activities for CHC oxidation. TDA Research, Inc., has developed promoted metal oxide catalysts which are more active and more stable than the commercially available CHC oxidation catalysts, and covert the CHCs entirely to the desired products (CO2 and HCl) without producing any Cl2 or toxic chlorinated hydrocarbons. The Phase II program will further improve the activity of the catalysts, develop methods to support the catalysts on cordierite honeycombs, and test their long term stability and resistance to common catalyst poisons.
