Description:

The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 regulate emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from equipment leans and from small vent streams. Gasoline vapor emissions from storage tanks at gasoline retail stations and refrigerant emissions from industrial chiller vents are examples of such streams. Very small (1-3 scfm) membrane vapor separation systems will be a simple, energy-efficient method of VOC emission control for these particular applications. Cost advantages could also result because membrane systems recover the VOC as a reusable condensed liquid.

Commercial membrane modules, that Membrane Technology and Research, Inc., (MTR) has developed to date show only moderate separation performance at low flow rates. The Phase I program demonstrated dramatic performance improvements with an innovative module design. In the Phase II program, the module design will be optimized and demonstrated in a membrane vapor recovery system operating at a gasoline retail station. The demonstration will be performed in cooperation with MTR's collaborator, a leading supplier of gasoline service station equipment.
