Description:

The Phase II work will demonstrate at pilot scale the successful recovery of antimony and iodine values from spent perfluoroalkyl-iodide (PFAI) catalyst. The technical feasibility of this innovation and simple recovery process was demonstrated in Phase I. This recovery process was shown to be capable of nearly 100% recovery of both antimony and iodine values without generation of hazardous air emissions, or process effluents.

The technical merit of the Phase II effort lies primarily in its development of the design data for the commercial scale plant to process this spent catalyst. In addition to providing this necessary information for the commercialization of this process, the Phase II pilot plant will also produce samples of recovered antimony trifluoride and iodine for market evaluation.

Upon successful completion of the Phase II objectives, Chemical and Metal Industries, Inc. has confirmed its intent to proceed to commercialization of the technology to process spent PFAI catalyst for recovery of antimony and iodine values. Processing of spent catalyst will completely eliminated this hazardous waste stream from the PFAI production process thus furthering EPA's goals of waste minimization or elimination.
