Description:

Fraday Technology, Inc., proposes to develop a novel process for plating hard chromium coatings from non-toxic, additive-free trivalent chromium (Cr(III)) plating baths. Currently hard chromium coatings are plated from toxic hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) plating baths. Plating from Cr (VI) plating baths presents concerns regarding its release to the environment and is a health hazard to operators. Currently, hard chromium coatings (i.e., >25 m) cannot be plated from Cr(III) baths. Commercial baths are available for plating decorative chromium coatings (i.e., <2.5 m), however, these baths contain organic additives and operate at low efficiencies. Consequently, even for decorative applications, Cr(III) baths are not widely used.

The overall objective is to demonstrate a novel process for hard chromium coatings from a additive-free Cr(III) plating bath using production run piston rods from Delco Chassis Division of General Motors. The specific objectives are to demonstrate equivalent or superior corrosion resistance and hardness of their Cr(III) hard chromium coatings compared to hard chromium coatings on finished piston rods plated from state-of-the-art Cr(VI) baths.
