Description:

Solidification and stabilization process, often referred to as fixation or immobilization, involve mixing waste with an appropriate ratio of binder/stabilizer agents. Several agents are presently in use (E.G., portland cement). However, limitations related to interfering compounds present in the waste, particularly organics, and the chemical form of the metal to be stabilized (i.e., organometal rather than inorganic metal form) frequently causes failure of the solidified waste to meet regulatory criteria for disposal. Sulfur polymer cement, which has been used as a construction material due to its excellent resistance to acid and salt environment and superior water tightness as compared to portland cement concrete, has recently emerged as a possible alternative as a binder/stabilizer agent for solidification/ stabilization of hazardous, low-level radioactive and mixed wastes. Also, elemental sulfur recovered from industrial waste streams have been used to supplement asphalt cement by blending sulfur and asphalt to form sulfur extended asphalt for asphalt pavement construction with excellent performance characteristics. The technologies of applying sulfur to stabilize contaminated wastes (e.g., soils) for use as construction materials are readily available The objective of this proposed research program are thus:

  1. to evaluate the effectiveness of using sulfur in the form of sulfur polymer cement and sulfur extended asphalt for solidification of lead contaminated soils; and
  2. to assess the potential use of the treated soils as construction materials.
