Description:
Ozone nonattainment air quality regions will require the implementation of ultra-low- NOx boiler burner systems. Currently, only costly Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems can achieve very low NOx emissions. Inexpensive low NOx burners, that can meet the regulations without SCR, are urgently needed by the utilities industry.Altex has identified the Minimum Emissions Burner System (MEBS) that has the potential to achieve very low NOx at low cost. Small-scale tests at Altex have shown the potential of the concept to lower NOx below 10 ppm. The burner is simple, requires no special materials and is projected to have a pollution control cost of $300/ton of NOx removed. To show the feasibility of this burner under the Phase I program, a burner of 1 MM Btu/hr capacity will be fabricated and tested, under conditions simulating the boiler application of interest. The results of analyses and testing will be used to evaluate the burner performance and costs, relative to existing burner, with and without SCR.
