Description:
The performance ceramics industry produces and sells over $18 billion dollars/year worth of ceramics products, and with 23% annual growth rate, it is the fastest growing segment of all industries listed in SIC. While rapid advances are being made in applying performance ceramics to numerous high volume products such as energy storage, electronics, medical devices, optics, telecommunications, etc., the synthesis and processing technology for performance ceramics continues to be environmentally unsound. Of particular concern is the need for and the use of large quantities of environmentally harmful solvents and additives. This program aims to demonstrate and develop an enabling technology that can dramatically reduce at source the use of polluting and hazardous substances. The proposed process has the following potential advantages: 1) Eliminates the need for solvents during the synthesis and processing steps; 2) Reduces, by over 90%, the formation of secondary gaseous, liquid or solid wastes; 3) Recovers mass and heat by process integration; and 4) Produces performance ceramics of improved quality (monodisperse, nanosize particle with excellent properties. Phase I will establish the proof-of-concept, Phase II will optimize the technology, while Phase III will commercialize the proposed technology for environmentally benign synthesis and processing of performance ceramics.Publications and Presentations:
