Description:

Currently the most advanced surface preparation techniques for aluminum alloy bonding are anodization processes. These processes are multiple-step complicated processes and use large amounts of water and power. In addition, these anodization processes use chromates which are toxic and against EPA and OSHA environmental compliance. Thus an alternative advanced surface pretreatment process for aluminum alloy adhesive bonding is needed. In this proposed research, Chemat Technology, Inc. plans to develop and evaluate a simple, environmentally benign surface pretreatment process for aluminum alloys. By incorporating thermally active organics into the porous alumina coating, the coating process has the potential to eliminate the priming step in the conventional anodization process. The sol-gel coating process does not use chromates thus preventing chromate pollution of the environment.
