BioBinder Activated Carbon for Pollution Control

EPA Contract Number: 68D60040
Title: BioBinder Activated Carbon for Pollution Control
Investigators: Kelly, John T.

Phase: I
Project Period: September 1, 1996 through March 1, 1997
Project Amount: $69,988

Research Category: SBIR - Air Pollution , Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) , Air Quality and Air Toxics

Description:

Large amounts of solid hydrocarbon wastes are produced each year. In selected cases, wastes can be processed into valuable chemicals. Activated carbon is a valuable product that could be derived from solid hydrocarbon wastes.

Altex Technologies Corporation has identified the BioBinder Activated Carbon (BAC) innovation that processes two specific waste streams to create a low-cost and effective granular activated carbon. The material is useful for pollution control, as well as many other industrial applications.

Under the Phase I program, BAC granules will be formed, carbonized, activated and tested for adsorption performance and strength. The performance and costs of the BAC process will then be evaluated to quantify the cost and performance benefits of BAC over conventional activated carbon. Given the 87 percent lower cost of the BAC base material, BAC product cost should be significantly less than the cost of commercially available activated carbon.
