Description:
This Phase I project addresses the fabrication of new inert anodes by reactive plasma deposition of metal oxides resistant to corrosive attack by melts typical of electrolytic aluminum refining. The approach will generate nonconsumable anodes that do not emit greenhouse gases, such as perfluorocarbons or carbon dioxide, or toxic gases, such as carbon monoxide or pyrenes. The electrode structures so fabricated would not be subject to problems currently encountered in inert anodes, such as current collection problems, cracking, and corrosion problems induced in cermets by incorporation of metals within the bulk of the electrode. Cracking and spallation of metal oxide films on metal substrates would be eliminated by the diffusional nature of the coating as opposed to that obtained with chemical vapor deposition methods. Such structures also would eliminate disposal problems associated with carbon anodes as well as capital cost and reduce operating costs associated with industrial electrolytic aluminum reduction. The proposed program will result in the development of new materials for use as inert oxygen-evolving electrodes in high-temperature molten salts. Such electrodes would represent a long-sought goal of the aluminum industry.
