Description:

Current research has demonstrated the technical, environmental and commercial benefits of the "green" approach to polyester synthesis, but more research is needed on a continuous method for the synthesis of polyol polyester intermediates for the urethane industry. The proposed research is basic in nature, but will provide a framework around which an actual process could be developed. The purpose of this project is to investigate polytransesterification of butanediol and various adipic acid esters under conditions to enhance diol synthesis, and assess molecular weight control of polytransesterification of butanediol and various adipic acid esters using pressure as a variable in supercritical carbon dioxide. Experiments will also investigate in detail the possibility of continuous synthesis of polyester polyols in supercritical carbon dioxide. These studies will enable the generation of a computer model for prediction of chain extension and termination during enzyme catalyzed synthesis of polyesters in supercritical fluids.
