Description:

Ethylene surpasses all other organic petrochemicals in production volume and is the primary raw material in a variety of synthetic organic chemical products. The largest use of ethylene is in the production of various forms of polyethylene. Annual domestic polyethylene production is about 20 billion pounds.

In the polyethylene polymerization process, about 1-2% of the ethylene feed is purged from polyethylene reactors to minimize accumulation of inert feed-stream impurities. In- process recycling reuse of a potential waste within existing operations will reduce discharges to the environment and conserve raw materials, which reduces the environmental impact of their production.

Under this SBIR project, Bend Research will develop an efficient, in-process recycle technology for recovering ethylene from purge streams. The Phase I goal is to demonstrate the feasibility of a transition-metal-based liquid absorbent that would allow for selective separation of ethylene from a purge stream via ethylene complexation.
