Description:

The automotive and steel industries impact over $450 billion dollars/year worth of commerce within the U.S. alone. Innovations in these industries impact our economy and environment in a major way and, therefore, are particularly desirable. Operations from these industries that are of considerable interest are metal-derived automotive parts manufacturing and assembly, metal finishing, coatings, and manufacture of useful products from iron and steel. Presently, enormous amounts of finish waste, environmentally undesirable byproducts, and emissions result from these operations. This SBIR project aims to demonstrate and develop an enabling technology based on nanoscale metal and alloy powders that can dramatically reduce at the source the use of polluting and hazardous substances. The proposed technology has the following potential advantages: (1) elimination of the need for very high forming temperatures and associated greenhouse gas emissions; (2) reduction, by over 90% of the formation of secondary hazardous metal wastes, as well as gaseous, liquid, and solid wastes over current levels; (3) improvement of yield from raw materials (reduces environmental impact from raw materials industries); and (4) production of products of improved quality (density, tolerance, mechanical properties, and reliability).
