Description:
This Phase I project will investigate the feasibility of developing a low-cost prototype using an in-situ bimetallic reduction system for the treatment and remediation of chlorinated solvent-contaminated ground waters. The development of cost-effective, comprehensive, and efficient methods of groundwater remediation for the removal of chemicals such as TCE, PCE, and TCA is critical, because groundwater is a major source of drinking water in many areas of the United States. Non-hazardous levels of TCE and similar chemicals are difficult to attain by techniques such as wastewater or municipal water supply treatment; other methods need to be developed if this water is to be used for human consumption. Currently available in-situ treatment approaches such as the use of zero-valent iron are costly, labor intensive, and slow. Recently, researchers at the University of Arizona have shown that effective and fast remediation of solvent contaminated ground waters is possible using an in-situ bimetallic system. In this Phase I research project, a team of MER Corporation and the University of Arizona will design, develop, and laboratory test a low-cost prototype for the in-situ bimetallic reduction system supported on a carbon fabric mesh to treat and remediate chlorinated solvent- contaminated ground waters.Supplemental Keywords:
