Description:
The project objectives are to develop and evaluate a generic methodology for emission control of a wide variety of air toxic particulate using a revolutionary breakthrough in filtration technology based on the recently developed Boundary Layer Momentum Transfer (BLTM) concept. This novel filter is designed to augment and substantially improve separate conventional toxic treatment/ reclamation methodologies. The study will emphasize the highest particulate removal efficiency for the lowest cost, size and pressure drop. The proposed filter is self-cleaning, lightweight, low cost and requires minimal maintenance. The study will identify specific industrial processes and air toxic substances applicable to this technology. The effort consists of modifications to a proprietary computer flow simulation model specific to BLMT filters to fine tune a preliminary filter design. A scale version of the prototype will be constructed to determine submicron particle exclusion capability. The model and scale prototype will be used to assess operational and geometric parameters affecting toxic particulate removal efficiency and associated pressure drop. An economic analysis of this collection method, augmented by complementary toxic treatment, will be contrasted with existing conventional treatment techniques. The study concludes with recommendation for a full-scale prototype exclusion filter design for Phase II development, fabrication, testing and evaluation.Supplemental Keywords:
