Objective:

nvestigate the efficacy of using environmentally benign oils (camelina, mustard, and algae oils) as asphalt recycling agents/rejuvenators to allow asphalt mixtures to be prepared using high RAP contents.

Progress Summary:

All three oils have proved effective as rejuvenators. The most extensive testing has been performed on camelina oil. It has been demonstrated that adding 5% of camelina oil to aged asphalt binder will restore its rheological properties to that of unaged asphalt binder and allow the asphalt binder to pass all performance grade tests.

Future Activities:

Further rheological testing will be performed on aged asphalt binder blended with mustard and algae oils. Additionally, IDEAL-CT, IDEAL-RT, and SCB tests will be performed on asphalt mixtures containing RAP rejuvenated using the various environmentally benign oils.
