Improved Methods to Manage PFASs for Small Water and Wastewater Treatment Systems in Rural Areas

EPA Grant Number: R840080
Title: Improved Methods to Manage PFASs for Small Water and Wastewater Treatment Systems in Rural Areas
Investigators: Huang, Qingguo , Chen, Yongsheng , Huang, Ching-Hua , Li, Ke , Hawkins, Gary
Institution: University of Georgia , Georgia Institute of Technology
EPA Project Officer: Packard, Benjamin H
Project Period: September 1, 2020 through May 9, 2025
Project Amount: $1,599,954
RFA: National Priorities: Research on PFAS Impacts in Rural Communities and Agricultural Operations (2020) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: Drinking Water , Endocrine Disruptors , Water , Aquatic Ecosystems

Objective:

This project aims to develop improved, cost-effective treatment trains with advanced technologies for the removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) from water, wastewater and biosolids to ensure safe water for drinking and agricultural applications in rural areas.

Approach:

The objective will be achieved through the following tasks: 1) collect and characterize water samples across the nation; 2) conduct systematic experiments to evaluate and improve the efficiency of state-of-the-art treatment unit processes; 3) choose or develop process models based on experimental results to aid the design and cost analysis of treatment trains that are appropriate for application in treating different water qualities in rural settings; 4) perform pilot studies to validate the selected treatment trains; and, 5) engage communities and communicate the research results through extension activities.

Expected Results:

Results of this project will include new scientific data and improved fundamental knowledge on a few advanced treatment processes that have not yet been investigated in-depth for PFASs, modular process train design with comprehensive model analysis for best synergy and cost-effectiveness in removing PFASs from water/wastewater and biosolids, and pilot demonstration of the optimized treatment trains. The results will be organized into reports and peer-reviewed publications that will be widely disseminated via websites, project reports, journal publications, workshop/conference presentations, extension work and outreach. Through collaboration with national wide partners, results will be very useful resources in planning strategies to mitigate the sources of PFASs in groundwater, surface water, drinking water and wastewater in rural communities and agricultural operations.
