Objective:

The overarching goal of Emory University’s “Center for Children’s Health, the Environment, Microbiome, and Metabolomics (C-CHEM2) is to investigate the interrelationships of components of the prenatal and postnatal environment of the fetus and child (i.e., environmental toxicants, maternal prenatal microbiome, and metabolome) and their impacts upon birth outcome, the infant microbiome and neurodevelopment. The Center seeks to produce new knowledge on the underlying mechanisms of and complex interactions between environmental exposures, microbiome and metabolic factors, and effects on neurodevelopment, to provide opportunities for new cross-disciplinary collaborations, and to disseminate this knowledge to both the scientific and lay community. With regard to the latter, we propose a strong focus on community engagement and the translation of our research findings into meaningful and culturally appropriate messages to communities. Built around our scientific theme of environmental exposures, the microbiome, metabolomics and neurodevelopment, the Center will develop and sustain centralized research resources and infrastructure, promote interdisciplinary research activities, train future generations of environmental health scientists, and conduct significant outreach to clinicians and communities at risk for health effects from environmental exposures. We plan to accomplish these ends through an Administrative Core, support of three thematic research studies, implementation of a pilot project program, and a Community Outreach and Translation Core (COTC) that will inform the work of the Center and assure that communities benefit from discoveries about environmental exposures and the association with the health of children.

The strategic objectives of the Center are to:

  1. Lead and manage a center that provides infrastructure and resources to support the development and conduct of research to quantify environmental exposures of African American women and infants and their impact upon the child microbiome, metabolome, and neurodevelopment.
  2. Intensify and develop interdisciplinary research collaborations and expand trainee opportunities to promote, sustain, and expand the scientific study of environmental exposures and their association with the child microbiome, metabolome, neurodevelopment and health outcomes.
  3. Translate Center discoveries into effective and sustainable strategies to reduce or counter environmental exposures that negatively impact the child microbiome, metabolome, neurodevelopment and health via engagement of African American families in metropolitan Atlanta to inform the Center on environmental concerns and culturally-relevant, family-centered interventions.

Progress Summary:

Please refer to the detailed descriptions provided in each report for Center projects for a description of the progress made toward meeting the overall goals of the Center.

Future Activities:

Please refer to the detailed descriptions provided in each report for Center projects for a description of the activities planned in order to meet the overall goals of the Center.
