Objective:

To identify water resource vulnerability and assess climate impacts on Yurok food security and health.

Progress Summary:

All work is progressing on schedule and the project has met the goals for the period as laid out in the Official No Cost Extension Award.

Primary data includes 1) locational and 26 months temperature data on 27 tributaries and 19 springs; 2) location information on public and private source water intakes; 3) sampling of domestic water sources for waterborne pathogens; 4) results from passive sampling for toxins associated with harmful algal blooms in 19 creeks and 4 Klamath River mainstem sites; 5) documentation from Community Participatory Research of Tribal community regarding climate change during workshops, community meetings, and directed staff/community member interviews; 6) sampling for domoic acid and paralytic shellfish poison in marine mussels; 7) record of significant drought impacts, and 8) compilation of baseline water quality data in Lower Klamath River tributaries utilizing sonde technology for dissolved oxygen (% and mg/mL), pH, conductivity, and temperature.

Completion of development of Yurok Local Environmental Observer as a hub of ANTHC Local Environmental Observer Network (LEO) and ‘app’ for Apple and Android products.

Completion of Yurok Climate Change and Summary Tribal Health Analysis Report.

Completion of data upload of local date to regional USFS NorWeST Streams database, report on GIS Stream Temperature Modeling of Yurok Ancestral Territory, and training on using continuous stream temperature modeling.

Future Activities:

Completion of 1) Yurok Tribe Climate Change Adaptation Plan for Water and Aquatic Resources and 2) tribally specific and culturally appropriate outreach materials.
