Objective:

This project will concentrate on learning to create an effective sustainable no-waste, repurposing apparel design and production process for secondhand clothing (SHC) businesses in Haiti

Approach:

We will adopt a cradle-to-cradle approach with a focus on the waste=food proposition (McDonough & Braungart, 2002). Therefore we will consider solutions such as no-waste pattern design techniques, recycling textile waste for use in accessories, downcycling of textile waste into building materials/construction, and repurposing of textile waste by local artisans. Our findings will be shared with our industry partner, Local Buttons, and its production partners in Haiti for implementation.

Expected Results:

Outputs of this project include a “redesign matrix” created by apparel design faculty members and graduate students and a “biodegradable/recyclable fabric matrix” created by both fiber science and apparel design students and faculty – both with the purpose of educating our industry partner (Local Buttons) and its Haitian production facilities in the optimal usage of recycled materials for different parts of garments and in minimizing wastage of recyclable textile materials.
