Objective:

The goal of this research project was to develop a process for economical production of butyric acid from glucose and xylose. The specific goals included:

  1. developing a metabolically engineered Clostridium tyrobutyricum strain
  2. and using the cells immobilized in a fibrous bed bioreactor for fermentation to achieve high butyrate yields and to produce butyrate at a high concentration and high production rate.
