Objective:

The objective of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) Air study is to prospectively examine the relation between an individual-level assessment of long-term ambient air pollution exposures (including fine particulate matter and gaseous co-pollutants) and the progression of subclinical cardiovascular disease in a multicity, multiethnic cohort. The MESA Air study will also prospectively examine the relation between an individual-level assessment of long-term ambient air pollution exposures and the incidence of cardiovascular disease, including myocardial infarction and cardiovascular death.

Progress Summary:

Work efforts in Year 1 of the project concentrated on revising and refining study protocols (to accommodate grant funding timing and amount and advisory comments); establishing key administrative, technical, and scientific infrastructure; and establishing local and regional centers around the country to initiate study activities. These study activities also included:

  • Written statistical analysis for the optimal number and location of study sites.
  • Establishment of an External Scientific Advisory Committee (ESAC), including a meeting in January 2005, revision of the study design based on written ESAC comments, and a written response to comments.
  • Initial recruitment of participants from the main MESA cohort.
  • Establishment of fixed air sampling sites within most of the Field Center locations.
  • Identification of areas for recruitment of new MESA Air participants.
  • Establishment of quality assurance and quality control procedures for air exposure sampling campaigns.

Future Activities:

Exam 4 is scheduled to begin in September 2005 and will last until June 2007. The majority of recruitment for MESA Air will be completed during this exam. Deployment of exposure assessment activities will be launched according to established protocols.
