Objective:

This study will examine personal exposure rates to air toxics in two heavily polluted urban areas, New York and Los Angeles. The air toxics that will be monitored are volatile organic compounds (VOCs), aldehydes, and particulate matter (PM) from area point, mobile, and non-anthropogenic sources. The study will provide information on the roles of seasons and days of the week, different meteorological conditions, and daily activities on exposures to these urban air toxics.

Approach:

This study will monitor students at the A. Phillip Randolph High School in New York and the Jefferson High School in Los Angeles, specifically their exposures to indoor, outdoor, and personal air toxics. We will conduct two pilot studies, first to test experiment design, and second to evaluate logistical concerns. These will prepare us for the four field measurement campaigns, one in the winter and one in the summer for both cities. In addition we will conduct 48 hour sampling on the two school rooftops and at a non-urban upwind location.

Expected Results:

Air toxic exposure results among students will be compared with area point, mobile, and non-anthropogenic sources. We expect to find a correlation between student exposure and area air toxic levels.
